It was in his Tha Carter III hay-day that iconic rapper, Lil Wayne, let us know that he was a “Martian”. Years later, the enigmatic artist, Future, came into being an “Extra-Terrestrial” before our very eyes. Today, there’s a new galactic star emerging in our solar system, and he is determined to make an imprint on the rap game. Having crash landed in Brooklyn, New York, anomalous rapper, Mr. Rey, has just released an even more anomalous work of art. Titled “Mind of Mars”, with only ten tracks, our East Coast alien proves his talents are equally out-of-this-world. His artistry is colorful, yet gritty; concrete, yet melodious; a unique matrimony between new-age aesthetic and golden era energy. Tracks such as “Epic”, “One Shot”, “Lord Knows”, “Judas”, “FTCU” and “TBH” are anthemic ventures into modern trap music; with the others being hefty, lyrical forays. Tucked into the seventh track, likewise, is something of a dancehall tribute; ignited by Mr. Rey’s lyricism and autotuned inflection. That autotuned delivery is precisely what carves the Brooklyn emcee a spot out among his forefathers; granting him not only a celestial sound, but also, just as matchless musicality. There is nothing like “Mind of Mars” out right now. Hang on to this incomparable quality of music, and our extraterrestrial emcee is bound to invade the mainstream sooner rather than later.

A popping drum loop, seasoned by hihats, lush kicks and a sparkling snap, introduces JRS3’s fresh, new single, “Run”. Eventually, an electronic synth buzzes into the mix, slithering across the percussion with the Fort Wayne rapper’s rhymes in tow. On this record, JRS3 flexes his penchant for metaphors. With his dark, doggish delivery, the Texan is relentless; detailing countless ways by which we should “Run” from his lyrical onslaught. Its sinister, yet experimental; borrowing the attitude of horrorcore for its verses, and energy of heavy rock throughout the chorus. Sharp, riotous guitar chords blaze underneath the hook of this song, making “Run” a cyborg of genres, with JRS3 at its creative helm. Very much so, by the end of the three minute and thirteen second run time, this Southern emcee proves just how comfortably he exists outside the conventions of hip-hop. He is unorthodox and unpredictable; traits that will guarantee him an iconic “Run” in the incredible realm of underground rap.

“Restoring the feel” is more than a phrase for Wisconsin wordsmith, Obi Khan. With his latest opus, “THC-4”, Khan draws a lyrical line in the sand between himself, and his new-school contemporaries. In a class of freshman, the Madison-based madman gives 16, sample-heavy reasons why he is among Honors. His beat selection is inarguable; consisting of some of the most diabolical, yet divine boom-bap you’ll hear all year. Predominately produced by Thanos Beats, these instrumentals are tried and true of the cornerstone of 90s Hip-Hop. They feature dingy, vinyl-samples and apposite vocals embedded in each borrowed record. From a production standpoint, the joint “Where Do I Go” has to be one of the album’s crowning moments. It features a Draculean melody, voiced through an organ, chaperoned by rusty boom-bap drums and a vocal sample that echoes the words of the song’s title. On the record, and every other that graces this masterpiece, the Obi Khan delivers excellently. He raps with such a guttural growl in his delivery, that seems to spawn from an unseen abyss within him. This apocalyptic aggression is exactly what amplifies his lyricism; making your ears want to listen to every bar he spits. On tracks such as “Bionic Man”, “Gods (ft. Thanos & Arewhy of Brotherhood 603)”, “Faded”, “Kamala (ft. Professa Dibbs)”, “Time”, “Itch The Scratch (ft. Thanos & Jabba the Kut)” and “Check the GRhyme (ft. DJ PAIN 1)”, the Midwest rhymesayer utterly disembowels the microphone; rapping circles around any of your favorite emcees. Although, I have a slew of personal favorites from the project, it can easily be played front to back without any skips or interruptions. Obi Khan has crafted a timeless hip-hop masterpiece, worth a thousand times more than he’s offering it for. If you’re a fan of lyrical greatness, dirty boom-bap, and overall, underground ingenuity, “THC-4” can not be ignored.
