Since 2013, Smoove Gotti has been sharpening his sword. Locked in the lab, with beat after beat swirling around him, the Ohio rapper has been in a chrysalis of musical development. Now, he is finally ready to emerge. “Faded”, “Hell Yeah” (feat. Oh), and “Shattered Star” (feat. Corey Jones), are a few outtakes from his six year sessions; all culminating into a blitzkrieg release for 2019. They each, in their own climatic way, highlight the growth of this Cleveland emcee; and his readiness to dominate the new year with an onfall of genre-bending sounds. “Faded” is a sample-heavy tribute to everyone’s favorite herb; channeling a smooth, softly drummed production under a blunt roll of rhymes. “Hell Yeah” pursues a rap-heavy, Dubstep aesthetic that would float perfectly about a local rave or nightclub; and “Shattered Star” is a sensual dive into airy R&B. Smoove Gotti lays verses full of romantic bars, whilst Corey Jones slips in harmonically to bridge the gaps. There is a variety in this trio of records that explicitly highlights Gotti’s sonic evolution. He forwards a new energy and ambiance with each of these records released; determined not to be pigeonholed in one genre or another. He is always searching for a way to push the envelope, and “Faded”, “Hell Yeah”, and “Shattered Star”, are astonishing successes in that regard. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long for the Midwestern musician’s next project. Slated for an April 1st release, is a joint album with fellow Cleveland artist, R Stonze, titled “Business As Usual”. After listening to these three tracks, you won’t want to miss what’s coming this Spring.

When the national, musical spotlight was first shone on Chicago, the sound of the Midwest city was championed for its exposure of the roughness and violence that plagued its Southside streets. Windy City rappers were rocketed to fame through their ability to express themselves with “Drill Music”; however, since then, a change has transpired. Haven freed themselves from the trap of their war-torn neighborhoods, some of these artists have abandoned the vicious sounds that garnered them attention in the first place; opting for more conscious, introspective art. The change is so powerful, that it has even trickled back into Chicago, and myriad artists are becoming enthralled in positivity. One such rapper is C-ZAR. Although, his hometown is Kankakee, forty miles outside of Chicago city limits, he has been tormented by the same violence nonetheless. Yet, as his upcoming project, “DUALITY EP” will show, he is determined to change for the better. Slated for a March 27th drop, “DUALITY EP” is a call to the G.M.Clan rapper’s inability to escape “evil”, yet innate yearn to do “good”. He previews the sound with two singles, “Different Now” and “Duality (Intro)”. Both records feature guttural, “Drill”-esque production, contrasted by honest, reflective bars. Sometimes seasoned with autotune, C-ZAR dives into the “Duality” of his lifestyle, making certain to live room for the streets, as well as himself, in his lyricism. True to an ancient, Chicago philosophy, the rapper is aiming for Growth & Development; and “DUALITY EP” is his solemn pledge. If you can connect with the tales of a man stuck between right and wrong, “Different Now” and “Duality (Intro)” are perfect for you. When it drops, “DUALITY EP” just might be your favorite of the year.

Although, currently unfinished and untitled, the upcoming project of Indiana rapper, G Humble, is already positioned to make a splash. On his website, this Gary talent has premiered four, spirited tracks from the promised record; with each packing their own, peculiar punch. “Sunshine” is a guitar-ridden, melody-driven trap rap ballad, featuring Raymond. G Humble chronicles an unforgettable sexual encounter on this track; a subject that trails him into the other joints, “Inner Freak” and “Catch A Vibe”. Where the latter is more suited for a tranquil smoke session with that special someone, the former is an auto-tuned, club-ready jam. A sensual chord progression, fulfilled by rolling trap percussions, and a mist of glowing melodies, take “Inner Freak” worlds beyond ours. Your only chance of returning to earth after orbiting this seductive banger, is jumping back to a track earlier in the collection, “Love Changes”. Perhaps the purest display of Hip-Hop within this selection, “Love Changes” is soulful and sublime. Its melody is entirely sample-based, illuminated by the belt of an ardent songstress. Bars from G Humble run alongside the trot of a steady drum loop and wavy bass-line; the perfect canvas for painting his life’s portrait. Just as G Humble does on this track, we must also appreciate his mother for the effort she put into raising him. For, without her tenacity, there would be no G Humble. Without G Humble, we would not have this captivating set of music to enjoy. If this is the guaranteed direction of his upcoming album, it is worth every second of our wait.

Go into MDAATH’s 2018 long-player, “MXD, Pt. II” expecting another typical, trap-rap album, you are in for a rude awakening. Do not be fooled by the clips of “Goodfellas” and “Blow” that commence the album; because the moment this Ohio rapper utters his first word, and that tranquil beat drops, your entire world will be flipped upside down. You will be suckerpunched by the intro, “Grade A”; and this onslaught will carry on for the next thirty-five minutes you are with him. MDAATH harbors his own, unorthodox way of creating a modern rap album. One that can not be easily compared to the artists and sounds that rival him. Granted, this Cleveland talent does dive into the commercial trap aesthetic with the speaker-slamming “Mexico” (feat. Donnell Kane), “Remain”, “Welcome 2 The Dusk”, and “Like That”; these jams are essential to highlighting the individuality of every other piece on the project. They draw your focus to the incredible boom-bap, lyricism and flow of “Ogz”, “Take Flight”, and “Get Up”; making you appreciate MDAATH’s noteworthy potential. With his unique subject matter, crossing topics of the streets, yearn for wealth, and praise of God; alongside his shining use of rhythm and melody, many of these tracks strike as songs only MDAATH could create. He absolutely has his own handle of the art of rap; and with the versatility displayed on this radiant “MXD, Pt. II”, he is only a handshake away from a mainstream break.

Houston rapper, TheFNKing’s, latest single, “Walk Away”, is as angelic as it is nefarious. Contrasting the abysmal, villainous Jordan Vandy-production that upholds it, is the seraphic singing of Holly Simmons on the chorus; bestowing a powerful duplexity onto an already vigorous record. Darkly, keys sparkle in the background of the beat, furthered by the lunge of piano chords and moving trap percussion. Like a light at the end of the tunnel, Holly Simmons splits this darkness with a resplendent belt, igniting a catchy, soul-stirring hook with every breath. That light only glows brighter with the blast of King’s awe-striking first verse. In this verse, and the one after it, King delivers that classic, Texan passion no ear can resist. The microphone is utterly crushed under the weight of his spirit, as he volleys bar after bar in a pure fire of conviction. Truly, “Walk Away” is for the fierce and determined. It is a roar of perseverance; and when matched with others, on TheFNKing’s “Long Live King” mixtape, the world is destined to hear.

It is extremely rare to see veterans link up with up-and-comers; and even rarer that a radio-ready banger comes of that fateful encounter. For your freshest dose of rarity and originality, the lovely Tanya Nolan presents visuals of her Kirko Bangz-assisted hit, “Love Ya”. Clocking in just short of three minutes, this record is a relatable, emotive dive into R&B. However, its sonics are only half of the equation. The other half is fulfilled by pristine scenes of Tanya Nolan, characters, and Kirko Bangz himself. For every strike on an amorous, organ chord; every step of a trap kick, stuttering hi-hat, and snare’s fall, there is a breath-taking shot of the Texan songbird harmonizing through an aching heart. When Bangz enters the video, the Houston power reaches a climax; with the auto-tuned star crooning to and fro in the studio. Truly, “Love Ya” is a cottony, soul-stirring record; wherein, the romantic turmoils of a rising talent and established star combine to manifest a passionate smash. As Tanya Nolan’s first, prominent release of 2019? Her voice will be ringing throughout our minds for many months to come.
