On your first listen to “Breathe (Ghetto Lullaby)”, by Apollon The Don, you may mistake the lyricist to be a fresh, Californian upstart. The whistling synth playing the back of his production harkens to G-Funk; whilst his paced, yet deliberate flow is reminiscent of the same LA legends that pioneered that style. It will come as a shock to learn that this gifted emcee is actually a native of Atlanta; however, that piece of information makes “Breathe” all the more jaw-dropping. For, it exists so greatly outside of the trap trend that currently grips his environment. From a young rapper emerging from Clayton County (Zone 3), the lyrical depth of his verses and Southern, soulful inflection of his bridges and hooks are a breath of fresh air. Apollon The Don proves on “Breathe” that he is a descendant of the greats who architected this art-form in the Golden Era. He commits his pen to storytelling; narrating the various plights of growing up in the impoverished ghettos of our country. “Breathe (Ghetto Lullaby)” is a record, that merges West Coast production, with deep, conscious lyricism and a soul-stirring, Southern harmony. If you have been searching for a fresh beacon of Hip-Hop hope to shine out of Atlanta, Apollon The Don is the answer. And he is a radiant one, at that.

Not a single nook or cranny in the life of Santa Cruz rapper, Recklous, goes unexplored on his latest “Cop This Mixtape” project. The twelve track opus is a melting pot of subjects and sonics all blending together to paint a unique portrait of the man behind them. The first two tracks (“L.O.R.D” and “Blocked Numba”) are scorching trap bangers, aimed at incinerating an ex-lover whose ostensibly done Recklous wrong. “I Bet You Would” strikes as an ancient, G-funk anthem; whose production could have been graced by the likes of Dr. Dre. In alignment with that aesthetic, Recklous taps into an off kilter, Eminem-esque flow near the end of his ultimate verse; tying the song together, sonically. A personal favorite, both production-wise, as well as lyrically, will be the track “Deadpool”. “Deadpool” features a spine-chilling, synth-based melody; backed by a dark, heavy brass, and galloping trap beat. On the record, Recklous dives completely into his past struggles with drug abuse and suicidal thoughts; touching are two topics that are extremely relevant to the youth of modern America. And he does so with unshakeable confidence; as if he fully knows the power of his voice is greater than any shame he may feel about his past. “Perfect 10” is a confession of the rappet struggling with finances; dealing with being kicked out, homeless and owing some significant debt. The last track, “Sextape” is a smooth, fun, melodic cut done in ode to Recklous’s new love interest. On the record, he expresses his desire to turn her into a star akin to Paris Hilton, and Kim Kardashian... by identical means. This rounds the mixtape off beautifully; having started with torment over a past relationship, and ending with hope in a new one. All in all, this is a great, wholehearted debut by Recklous; and if he continues to be this honest in his music, he will build a fanbase like no other.

“Zo: The EP” is a five-track venture; with each track feeling unique and independent of the last. The first cut, “Goin Hollywood” gets the ball rolling with a mysterious, keyboard melody supported by skipping claps, hats, and a thumping 808. As one could imagine, Zo is rapping about how motivated he is to go “Hollywood” and see the fruition of his dreams. Track two, “Problematic” is the closest embodiment of the “Detroit sound” you'll find on this album. It features a dark, piano-driven instrumental, laced with a dribbling 808, and more claps, hats and percussion; with Zo himself rapping almost-endlessly about the very violence that plagues his city. That is the magic of Zo the Scholar's rapping. On each one of these tracks (including the last three, “Paradox”, “Space Travelin'” and “Changed Up”), it feels as though Zo will never run out of bars. He treads effortlessly across beats, spitting an infinite amount of lyrics in a style that will surely earn him respect and veneration among his forefathers. Its only a matter of time before D-Town crowns another remarkable rapper. “Zo: The EP” has certainly started the clock.
