New York will forever and always be the mecca of Hip-Hop. Whether rocking the radio with its take on trap music, or celebrating the Golden Era, boom-bap sound it birthed, The Empire State will always be at the forefront of rap. Likewise, its emcees will always be some of the best this country has to offer. Case in point: Enlightenment, a Buffalo trio devoted to resurrecting real rap. In dropping their 2019 effort, “TRAP: True, Real & Presence”, each one of them shines a lyrical light of their own. The clique is made up of Dom.P, Twin 2xs and the phenomenal femcee, T-Hood. Their chemistry is absolute when it comes to “True Real & Presence”. There is an abundance of speaker-thumping anthems running through this ten-track project— such as “Drug Deal” (feat. ElCamino), “Regular”, “Zoo” and “”JumpMan”. However, nothing hits harder than the boom-bap inflections riddling the project. T-Hood already stands out amongst her brethren as a powerful emcee; however, her performance, as well as her partners’ — on songs like “Straight Bars” launched her into another atmosphere. In forty minutes, Enlightenment go from being another trio of spitters, to the modern paragon of New York Hip-Hop artistry. They completely annihilated any beat that comes their way. With Buffalo picking up steam through Griselda Records, the door to stardom is ajar for this creative trio. “True, Real & Presence” is their first, herculean step through that vestibule. Check it out below, and stay tuned for The Enlightenment Tour coming to a city near you this August.

Riding a nonstop 808, the flossy Jasmine L’Chelle is making a move for the Queen of Rap crown. It comes in the form of “Centerfold”: a banging, Los Angeles anthem, celebrating this Hip-Hop darling’s inextinguishable ambition. You can see it in her eyes as they flutter at the camera in the beginning of the single’s seductive music video. She is teeming with talent; evident by the way she can flaunt her glamour and curves, whilst slinging flows and bars like you have never heard. Her two verses are as lethal as they are alluring; carrying dangerous doses of uniqueness and originality. Between tantalizing her audience with hypnotic twirls and crawls, the Californian rapper offers rhyme after rhyme regarding her greatness, lavish lifestyle, and even a dream she had about Drake. Her inflection is truly what makes this record the banger that it is. Over the club-ready, trap production of “Centerfold”; Jasmine L’Chelle whips her own, distinct delivery, keeping the momentum of the song at a pleasurable constant. She never has to do too much. Her entrancing, braggadocious bars; novel flow; and irresistible charm, are all she will ever require. With that triple threat, she is destined for the throne.

Dissect the art of our female, modern-R&B stars — such as Kehlani, Summer Walker, and Queen Naija — and you’ll emerge with a new, heartrending lease on life. There is something so pure, so organically honest, about the trap-riddled love songs of these celestial songstresses; and Floridian up-and-comer, Keisha Stewart, is another fabulous example. Her latest, “Ecstasy” is a sparkling, modern-R&B anthem; alit by the poetry of a woman falling in love. In contrast to the massive, pristine production, Keisha’s lyrics are real and raw. Floating across the kicks, rimshots, euphoric guitars, and bubbly bassline of Yonas K Beatz, our Fort Myers vocalists completely empties her heart. Belts and harmonies, exalted by reverb and delay, fully convey every ounce of passion she has for a man with whom she’s finally ready to risk it all. It is a sentiment anyone breathing can relate to. Whether you’ve truly fallen in love, or ever found yourself caught in the whirlwinds of infatuation, Keisha Stewart’s romantic banger, “Ecstasy”, will speak volumes to your soul.

The beginning of RK DMOB’s colossal single, “B!+CH”, is mellow and slow. Yet, the moment his voice collides with the mic, everything explodes. A North Carolinian whirlwind rips through the booth, leaving nothing but a trunk-rattling banger in its wake. “Diamonds on my neck, bitch! I run up a check, bitch!” RK DMOB is scorching the very moment the first 808 drops; rocking the chilled, rhodes chord progression with a flurry of modern-trap drums. A Houston twang, which has crept into the rapper’s delivery through eight years of living in the Lonestar State, wobbles at the end of each and every bar. The fusion of these two influences (North Carolina and Texas), into “B!+CH” make for the perfect Southern, club-ready hit. Whether he’s banging out of your aux, or blasting from the speakers of your local venue; one thing’s for certain: RK DMOB will be climbing the charts.

A latin guitar, seasoned by a wispy vocal sample and ad-libs from Maor Mo, himself, slowly spark his latest single, “Karaoke”. Featuring the undeniable, Hip-Hop legend, Talib Kweli, early into the record, “Karaoke” foreshadows its potential as a chart-topping, R&B hit. The flame shoots up the wick the moment our Floridian crooner busts into his initial verse: a fast-pace rhyme bouncing along steady percussion. Albeit, a captivating way to kick off an R&B record; the real explosion occurs the moment his first melody is vocalized. He incinerates icons, T-Pain and Drake, with a fiery, harmonized bridge that slides into a scorching, soulful chorus. This energy is forwarded into his succeeding verse; however, the instant an anticipated, “Black Star” someone graces the mic, all hell breaks loose. With a quick, yet classic verse that will certainly magnetize Hip-Hop heads worldwide, Talib Kweli brings the energy of “Karaoke” full circle. The emcee inertia Maor Mo kicked off this record with, flows smoothly into the legend; and from the legend, into this epic, radio-ready smash. As passionately as he references them on his hook, there will be no more “Karaoke” bars for this Miami musician. With a song like this he’s headed for a much bigger stage. @Maor

Although, currently unfinished and untitled, the upcoming project of Indiana rapper, G Humble, is already positioned to make a splash. On his website, this Gary talent has premiered four, spirited tracks from the promised record; with each packing their own, peculiar punch. “Sunshine” is a guitar-ridden, melody-driven trap rap ballad, featuring Raymond. G Humble chronicles an unforgettable sexual encounter on this track; a subject that trails him into the other joints, “Inner Freak” and “Catch A Vibe”. Where the latter is more suited for a tranquil smoke session with that special someone, the former is an auto-tuned, club-ready jam. A sensual chord progression, fulfilled by rolling trap percussions, and a mist of glowing melodies, take “Inner Freak” worlds beyond ours. Your only chance of returning to earth after orbiting this seductive banger, is jumping back to a track earlier in the collection, “Love Changes”. Perhaps the purest display of Hip-Hop within this selection, “Love Changes” is soulful and sublime. Its melody is entirely sample-based, illuminated by the belt of an ardent songstress. Bars from G Humble run alongside the trot of a steady drum loop and wavy bass-line; the perfect canvas for painting his life’s portrait. Just as G Humble does on this track, we must also appreciate his mother for the effort she put into raising him. For, without her tenacity, there would be no G Humble. Without G Humble, we would not have this captivating set of music to enjoy. If this is the guaranteed direction of his upcoming album, it is worth every second of our wait.
